Woburn Company Creates Lithium Free Batteries
WOBURN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Woburn-based battery company is looking to revolutionize energy storage.
Alsym Energy created a non-flammable, non-toxic, non-lithium battery that the company says is strong enough to power industrial plants. CEO Mukesh Chatter said not using lithium eliminates the risk of battery explosions.
“Look at steel plants,” Chatter said. “They cannot [use] lithium batteries because, god forbid, there is a fire, the whole plant has a risk of blowing up.”
The Congressional Budget Office estimated that in 2021, “the manufacturing sector was responsible for 12 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions,” and that number is only expected to increase.
But Chatter said that renewable energy requires large batteries, which is why tackling battery explosions is so important. Alsym Energy said their batteries can help plants store green energy onsite.
“That’s what we’re so excited about: our chance to actually to get the industries to start using renewable,” Chatter said.
He said that converting the steel industry to battery power alone would cut more emissions than every car on the road today.
Chatter expects to start shipping out the batteries in 2026.
