The motor cooling approach behind Hyperdrives’ new Munich engineering centre

Electric motors are limited less by magnetics than by heat. Hyperdrives, a Munich-based electric propulsion company, tackles that at source: a dielectric fluid runs directly through the hollow copper conductors of the winding, removing heat where it’s generated rather than at the motor’s surface. The result is a significantly smaller, lighter and more material-efficient drive – built on the hairpin architecture and manufacturing processes the industry already utilizes.

Hyperdrives is opening a new HQ and engineering center in Munich’s Obersendling district. At almost 600 square meters, it is around six times Hyperdrives’ previous footprint, with space set aside for a future pilot manufacturing line for its hollow-conductor stators. The company is currently working with several global OEMs and suppliers across automotive, off-highway, marine, and aviation to develop next-generation electric propulsion systems based on its hollow-conductor cooling technology
