Diesel to Electric Conversion
Diesel to Electric Conversion
Converting Miss Amelia
Over the past few weeks we have been converting a 50’ 25 year old narrowboat from diesel to electric.
The boat is call Miss Amelia and is owned by Steve. He’s a retired teacher in his mid sixties enjoying a new career as a folk musician. He has a permanent mooring in Rugby where there’s a lively music scene. He and his band are very much in demand. They played at the Crick Boat Show too.
Main jobs that we have carried out.
- Replaced diesel motor with a 15kW PMAC electric motor
- Installed a 30kWh lithium battery bank
- Installed 1600W of solar
- Installed a 5kW inverter
- Replaced solid fuel stove with a Reflecs stove and back boiler
- Installed new calorifier and radiator
- Replace the kitchen work top
- Welded defects to hull
- Replaced cutlass bearing
- Fixed loose rudder coupling
- Blacked hull
While the boat has been under cover Steve has been working on the topsides by taking much of the paint back to bear metal. He’s doing a great job too.
Mothership Marine build a lot of beautiful boats from scratch. These boats can be expensive. They are all bespoke and we try to be as ecological as possible by using reclaimed timber in the fitout. Same goes for a lot of the other fitting. It adds history, character to a boat while being ascetically pleasing.
Upcycling is in our DNA and what could be more ecologically than upcyling a whole narrowboat. So long as the boat has good bones it can be a very economical alternative.
